GOOD SOLID BASICS, a spinning workshop with CELIA QUINN. Celia is a Master spinner who lives right here in Homer and we are very excited to have this opportunity to offer this workshop. Her schedule is very full and this is a rare chance for local spinners.  Celia has taught workshops extensively across the U.S. since 1983. She knits, weaves and crochets, with an emphasis on garments and household textiles. She has spun everything from rope to sub-sewing thread, and still holds Spin-Off Magazine’s fine spinning record for cotton, at approximately 83, 000 yards per pound. Her thoughts on spinning can be found in many back issues of Spin-Off.

Saturday, October 26th 2013. 10 am to 5pm.  Cost $75 plus $8 material fee.

Minimum participants 5, Maximum 10

In this class, students will be introduced to the long draw and worsted methods of spinning, and will learn appropriate uses of these techniques. They will also learn about spinning wheel mechanics, to better understand how to adjust their wheels to best advantage, to choose the best materials to use for brake bands and drive bands, how to oil your wheel, and how different wheels are best suited for certain yarns. We will discuss basic spinning principles, and how understanding those principles can help you to produce fine to thick yarns. Students will also learn about different methods of fiber preparation through demonstrations of carding, flicking and combing. We will also address plying methods, and practice if time allows.
This class is intended for spinners who can spin a continuous thread, and be fairly comfortable with their wheel.

Materials fee:$8/person
